Driving Sustainability with Energy Management

Overview
A brief overview of what CMS is and its importance.

According to a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA), there was a 5% surge in the global energy demand in 2021 and a further 4% rise in 2022. Additionally, a study suggests that in the next 20 years, the global energy demand is expected to shoot up by 48%. What the current situation essentially highlights is that energy wastage is at its highest while the demand for energy is increasing rapidly.

In order to achieve a sustainable future, it is crucial that this in-balance between the energy supply and demand is dealt with. The only possible way to do this is to employ better energy management practices. To put it simply, sustainability and energy management go hand-in-hand.

Sustainability and Energy management

What’s the Link?

To understand how these two are tied to each other, it is important for you to first understand what energy management actually means.

What is Energy Management?

Broadly speaking, energy management entails the organized, proactive, and systematic management of the energy consumption within a facility or organization in a manner which accommodates economic and environmental requirements. Following are the essential steps that a facility must take for proper energy management:

· Recording and metering energy consumption data.
· Identifying energy wastage factors.
· Actively remediate energy wasting factors.
· Keep track of progress and the resulting improvements.

How Does Energy Management Help Achieve Sustainability?

Good energy management practice allows you to use energy more efficiently. This means that you’ll be able to satisfy all your energy-related needs while consuming less amounts of energy. While it is obvious how this helps your business, how does it help achieve sustainability?

Looking at the bigger picture, when the energy consumption numerous businesses and organizations, such as yourself, decreases, the net national power consumption also goes down. The reduced demand for energy results in significantly lowering the carbon emissions as the fuel powered power plants will be operated at lower intensity to match the lower demand.

This will most definitely help offset global warming and climate changing taking us many steps closer to achieving sustainability.

Moreover, better energy management also prepares us to meet the ever rising energy demands. Another benefit of this is that the excess energy can be supplied to the electricity deprived areas thereby paving a way for rural development. Furthermore, lower usage of fossil fuels means that there will be more reserves left for the future generations to come. While it should be our top priority to become fossil fuel independent, it is nevertheless, better to have backup fossil fuel reserves.

Final Thoughts

Achieving sustainability means curtailing practices and activities that harm the environment without having to compromise on the quality of human life. As such, reducing carbon emissions without having to sacrifice things such as transport and electricity are perfect examples of sustainability. Keeping in mind the arguments presented above, the link between sustainability and energy management is clear.
